This past weekend was the 2nd Art in Bloom exhibit at Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica, NY. This event pairs professional florists with artwork from the museum’s permanent collection and asks that we interpret that piece of art into a floral arrangement. My painting this year was Number 10 by Bradley Walker Tomlin; the palette and abstract design has always suggested to me the way sunlight and sky can be visible through the dark branches of a tree. This inspired me to create my own little forest, using yarn-wrapped midollino sticks as the trees. I used moss and fern as the forest floor, and the flowers represented the color of the sun and sky. Happily, this arrangement won Best Creative Design from both the judges and the museum’s guests!
